The Last Emperor (2024)
"The Last Emperor" is Juice’s production of an experimental and biographical theatre piece that employs puppetry to delve into the emotional journey of the last emperor of China. This engaging and in-depth examination explores how historical events have shaped individual destinies. The production incorporates screen performance, physical theatre, puppetry, and multi-channel composition to narrate the compelling life story of Puyi, the final ruler of China's Qing Dynasty.
Drawing from historical context and Puyi’s autobiography, the narrative is divided into five chapters:
1906-1912 The feudal emperor, who was young and insignificant
1912-1931 The road to restoration under the democratic republic
1931-1945 The puppet emperor under the Anti-Japanese War
1945-1949 The swinging chess piece in the civil war between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party
After 1949 The new citizens of New China
These experiences and stages poignantly depict Puyi as a character wrestling with his destiny, positioned at the heart of shifting social structures during a pivotal moment in history, whose story is often uncovered in education on the modern history of China.
